Around the World in 30 Days : a month of events celebrating World Music featuring musicians from the School of Oriental and African Studies and the World’s top conservatoires.

Throughout March, The Gallery Cafe will host live music performances, workshops, talks and films; as well as the chance to sample food and traditions from around the world.

We are calling March, Around the World in 31 Days! We have a series of amazingly high calibre World Music performances from the likes of SOAS, RAM and RCM. New Opening Hours

From this week onwards we'll be opening earlier in the mornings and staying open later in the evenings. This means you can drop in for a coffee on your way to work or relax with a glass of wine on your way home.

Monday - 8am to 9pm

Tuesday - 8am to 9pm

Wednesday - 8am to 10pm

Thursday - 8am to 9pm

Friday - 8am to 11pm

Saturday - 9am to 8pm

Sunday - 9am to 8pm

There's plenty more changes to come over the next few weeks and into the New Year. Please do give us your thoughts, wants and feedback...it's your cafe!

Canadian Folk & Roots Showcase - Thursday 25th November

If you're wondering where on earth you might find some handsome country musicians this Thursday night, then look no further as we've got more than our fair share...We've got two fantastic artists all the way from Canada: Gordie Tentrees and John Wort Hannam, plus local musician Mat Gibson to warm your ears as well as your toes this...

Gordie Tentrees is from the cold and rustic Yukon Territory, has his roots in the country blues sounding like a young John Prine, Tentrees and his band play seductively with guitars licking and curling around his lyrics.

Also on the bill, John Wort Hannam is from the prairies of Southern Alberta and is one of Canada's best folk/roots songwriters. With comparisons to Gordon Lightfoot & James Keelaghan, John Wort Hannam is a born story- teller with a keen eye for the quirky and lyrics that create stories behind the songs. he played a house party for us a few years back and got the whole room dancing. Needless to say, we've got a bit of a soft spot for this charming fellow.

Local country musician Mat Gibson has been recently described as a ‘youthful Neil Young’ and plays “spinning, moving tales of failed relationships, missed birthdays and reminiscence”. Mat can also be found gigging for our good friends Clubhouse Records who are an independent Americana/Country label based in the UK. They've got a ton of new releases planned for 2011, so check 'em out here

When these guys are big (and not just in Japan) you can say you saw them here first...

Vegware Packaging

Good News! We now use compostable packaging in our cafe! Vegware products made from plants and are compostable, so they can turn back to soil 12 weeks after use.

Vegware is the UK’s first ever completely compostable food packaging company.

Vegware manufactures and distributes compostable food packaging and catering disposables. The full range is made from recycled or annually-renewable materials, and all products are suitable for commercial composting, Used products are then organically recycled into compost, or topsoil and biogas, typically in 6-12 weeks. Vegware invests in R&D and has brought many compostable firsts to market, including the insulated hot cup and lid set, soup containers and high-heat resistant cutlery.

A fresh start...

We've been rather neglectful of this poor old blog since the summer. But, after a few months of collecting dust, we've dug it out from the virtual cupboard under the stairs and it's back and better than ever. We've got lots to tell you about, and if you've been a regular at the cafe over the past few weeks you will have noticed a few of the changes. We're gradually sprucing up the decor, adding loads of new tasty bites to the counter top and we've had a rather swish new logo designed by the very talented Miss Julie Seal. Watch this space for more changes to come, plus updates on our forthcoming events and projects.
